Cycling is a very large part of my life as is the charity work I attempt to get involved with. This year I've been talked into riding 6 very large charity rides to raise much needed funds for Cancer Research with an amazing group called the Vision Crusaders as a part of the RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER, a worldwide fundraising effort to finally rid the world of a terrible disease. I'm just using the tools at my disposal to help raise funds to fight cancer.
In the day I work as a Commercial Photographer in Brisbane. You can find my work here MattL.com.au.
Outside of that I run a fixed gear group called becausefixie which is just a bunch of mates who ride on a Sunday night.
The reason I ride;
I'm very lucky to say that I've not directly been impacted by cancer; my nearest incident is the loss of my Grandfather from Pulmonary carcinoma (Lung Cancer) when I was just 3 years old. I was too young to understand and was never emotionally scarred from the incident, though it would have been amazing to have the ability to grow up with him and get to know him better. My memories of him are simple; he was on an oxygen tank in his Lutwyche house coughing a lot. I'm dedicating my ride to him in the hope that others don't need to be lost to such a cruel disease.
Now whilst most people choose to take the ride on a road bike with gears and brakes, I've opted to complete my ride on a brake-less track bike/fixie. These bikes do not allow you to coast or change gears and the faster the pedals go, the faster you go.
Join me in the ride, donate now, and help us win the fight against cancer.
